BAKSA: In a shocking incident, BJP MLA and newly appointed speaker of Assam Assembly Biswajit Diamary was made to apologize for using a colloquial phrase while speaking in the Assamese language.

Referring to the Marwari community, Diamary used a phrase in his native language during a talk show on a regional channel which was not taken well by the All India Professionals' Congress (AIPC) Assam president Gauravv Somani.

Condemning Diamary, Somani went on to say that the way Diamary referred to the Marwari community was extremely "disrespectful."

Seeking apology to the community on Thursday, Diamary said that he had no intention of insulting any community. He was speaking in his native language Assamese in which it is common to use similar sounding terms or analogous words during communication.

He used those words in general and there was no other intention behind using it, explained Diamary.

He further said that if Somani is indeed from Assam, he should be well acquainted with the Assamese language, grammar and use of words.

It will be unfortunate if he doesn't have the knowledge about these things, added Diamary.

"If in Assam one cannot speak Assamese language and on top of that has to apologize for speaking in Assamese, then it is a very pathetic state for Assamese language," Diamary further added.

"If my use of the Assamese language disrespected any community then I am extending my sincere apologies. But because of what I said, it should not impact my community", added Diam
