Assam: Baghjan oil well blowout site loses connectivity after bridge collapses

The Baghjan oil well blowout site has lost its connectivity with the other parts of the state through Rupai Tea Estate in the Tinsukia district in Assam after a bridge at the Estate collapsed. This was the link road. However, the spot can be reached through the Kaliapani bridge in the district.

“Due to incessant heavy rainfall and regular movement of heavy vehicles on the bridge since May 27^th, 2020, when the Baghjan blowout took place and a subsequent blast at the site on June 9^th, 2020, the bridge damaged. It will not only hamper the Baghjan oil well blowout capping work but the thousands of local residents will suffer due to it,” Ramnath Bharali, a local resident told the INISDENE.

The locals also urged the government for the reconstruction of the bridge at the earliest.

On the other hand, heavy rainfall has created havoc across the Tinsukia district. All the rivers are likely to cross the danger level and water has filled up in the lowland areas in the rural and urban areas. Several people are taking shelter on railway tracks while others in community halls.

Several organisations and the residents especially those living at the riverside in the remotest areas of the district have earnestly appealed the district administration to step up necessary action to provide relief to flood victims.

However, no any casualty has reported so far from the district in the second flush of flood in the state.
