GUWAHATI: Banks in Assam will now be allowed to open for a longer period of time owing to a decline in the number of COVID-19 cases and fatalities and signs that the second wave of the pandemic is drawing towards a close.

According to reports, the banking hours will be increased from June 1 to June 5 allowing customers a longer period of time to complete their transactions at the banks.

Instead of 10 am, banks will be allowed to open their shutters at 9 am in the morning.

They will be allowed to stay open till 1 pm in the afternoon.

The new relaxations will be applicable to both public and private sector banks.

Customers of the banks will therefore get a longer window to deposit and with money, cheques, among other things at their respective bank branches.

This seems to be a step towards easing the curbs that have been imposed to arrest the spread of the virus in the state.

Assam's chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has stated in clear terms that the state government is unlikely to do away with all the curbs at once and the 'unlock' will be a gradual process. Furthermore, he has predicted that the number of cases will show a decline in the coming few weeks.

The second wave of the virus, which has been deadlier and more destructive, with the detection of newer more dangerous strains of the constantly-evolving virus, is likely to peak in May-July, health experts believe.

Assam reported 3,245 fresh COVID-19 cases yesterday, informed the state government.

This is a marked decline from the number of cases and casualties that were being reported only a handful of days back.

Now, the total case count in the state shot up to 4,06,868.

The state also saw 5,690 recoveries and 50 deaths in the last 24 hours, taking the overall tallies to 3,49,773 and 3,300 respectively. At present, Assam has as many as 52,448 active cases.
