NEW DELHI: The central leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has officially announced the names of 70 candidates who will contest the ensuing elections in Assam. Assam Election 2021 will be conducted in three phases - on March 27, April 1, and April 6.

 

Arun Singh, the Nation Secretary of the saffron party, today announced the names of 70 candidates who will contest the elections on BJP tickets. Singh today informed that as many as 11 sitting MLAs shall be deprived of tickets, and new faces -- such as defected Congresswoman Ajanta Neog -- will take their place.

 

Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) will contest from 26 Constituencies. In the last elections held in 2016, the party had fielded candidates in 27 Constituencies.

 

Singh today confirmed that while Assam BJP president Ranjeet Dass will contest from the Patacharkuchi Constituency. Chief minister Sonowal and Minister Himanta Biswa will contest the polls from their current Constituencies -- Majuli and Jalukbari.

"This time around, the AGP has vacated Patacharkuchi where our president Ranjeet Dass is contesting," Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, adding that as many as 8 Seats have been allotted to the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL).

 

The Rabha Joutha Sangram Samiti, another BJP ally, will contest in a single Constituency. "Their candidate, however, will contest under the BJP symbol," added Sarma.

The top leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) unit of Assam and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) had visited the national capital on Wednesday to meet the BJP central leadership as both the alliance partners reportedly failed to reach an agreement over the seat-sharing deal for the upcoming Assam Assembly Elections 2021.

 

 

Singh was joined by Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Minister Himanta Sarma, and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) leader Atul Bora during the formal announcement of the candidates.
