GUWAHATI: Himanta Biswa Sarma, the BJP's go-to man in the Northeast, has come under fire from regional party's leaders for his "offensive" comments against the newly-floated regional parties in the state ahead of the Assembly Polls. Jagadish Bhuyan, prominent leader of the newly-floated Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP), has turned down heavily against Assam's Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his "disrespectful" comments about the newly-formed regional players of Assam.

It needs mention here that Jagadish Bhuyan, who defected to the BJP from the AGP way back in 2015, resigned from the party in protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

Jahnu Barua, prominent film-maker from Assam, who is a staunch supporter of regional elements, says that he is not at all bothered by the alleged "disrespect." "I have nothing to say in this matter. If someone wants to make clownish statements, he/she is free to do so," Barua told us over the phone.

"It is not befitting for a party that has hired 99% of its players to pass such comments," said Bhuyan, taking jibes at the saffron party, which has 'imported' most of its top leaders in Assam (including Biswa Sarma) from the Congress party.

Bhasco de Saikia, the Chief Convenor of the 'Raijor Dal', says that the BJP has become worried. "By making statements like these, he (Biswa Sarma) is trying to stop the momentum of the regional parties. However, these kinds of statements will not stall the momentum of the regional parties. The public will remain in favour of the regional parties as it is being felt that a return to regionalism is the need of the hour in Assam."
