Guwahati, May 11, 2019:

People of Assam will be stoked to learn that one of its bravest sons, Lieutenant General Rana Pratap Saikia, has joined on Friday as the Chief of Staff (COS) in the Eastern Command of the Indian armed forces at Fort William at Kolkata.

It is to be mentioned that Kalita is only the second army lieutenant general from the state of Assam and the first Chief of staff in the Eastern Command. The entire Northeast region is under the Eastern Command.

Kalita was born in Rangia town in Assam and attended Army School in Goalpara of Assam.

It may be mentioned that Kalita had been entrusted with the charge of arranging the funeral of former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee who passed away in 2018.

Kalita was also deputed to the United Nations not once, but twice.
