Assam By Polls: BJP and its ally UPPL win all 5 assembly seats

GUWAHATI: After a tense battle for 5 seats in Assam, BJP and its ally UPPL won all five seats in the Assam By polls. BJP’s Sushanta Borgohain won the Thowra assembly seat by a margin of 30,561 votes.

UPPL candidate Jiron Basumatary and Jolen Daimary  won the Gossaigaon and Tamulpur seats by a margin of of 28,252 and over 50,000 votes respectively.

BJP candidate Phanidhar Talukdar won the Bhabanipur seat by a margin of 25,641 votes.

BJP’s Rupjyoti Kurmi won the Mariani seat by a margin of  40,104 votes.

The polls witnessed a cumulative voter turnout of 74.04 per cent of which the highest count at 78 per cent was recorded at Bhabanipur assembly seat.

Before the results BJP candidate for Thowra Sushanta Borgohain has said that the people of the constituency tagged him as a

Raijor Dal tried to create an atmosphere and portray me a traitor for switching to BJP from Congress.

“The party tagged me a traitor but I am glad to see that the people of Thowra have considered me trustworthy”, said Sushanta Borgohain.

“We may have betrayed but that was for necessary for progress of the people”, he added.

While speaking on polls, Rupjyoti Kurmi had earlier anticipated that after joining the ruling party some of his enemies might have turned into well-wishers for the decision he had taken.

Gossaigaon resgistered a voter turnout of 77.37 per cent followed by Tamulpur 67.88 per cent.

77.56 per cent was recorded at Thowra and a 71.70 per cent turnout at Mariani seat.

The polling took place on 30th October in Gossaigaon, Bhabanipur, Tamulpur, Mariani and Thowra assembly segments, with strict adherence to COVID-19 protocols.
