GUWAHATI: As Assam is bracing itself for the by-election in at least six constituencies, all eyes are already stuck at Thowra constituency, known to be a Congress bastion, after two political parties - Raijor Dal and Bharatiya Janata Party - have blown poll-bugle already but Congress.

According to InsideNE sources, Assam Congress has funnelled down Ajoy Kumar Gogoi's name and he is most likely to be the next Congress candidate from the Thowra LAC.

Gogoi is currently serving as Head of the Department of Political Science at Moran Women College. He has been a long associate of Congress's student wing National Student Union of India (NSUI) but he had never taken part in active politics to date.

Thowra LAC has been lying vacant after two times Congress MLA Sushanta Borgohain resigned from the party and legislative assembly to join the BJP on August 1.

Gogoi, if Congress chooses, in his maiden contest will face Borgohain from BJP. Notably, earlier BJP candidate Kushal Dowari won from Thowra twice as well, once as an independent candidate. Borgohain will be chosen over Dowari this time.

In the last election, Congress had won from Thowra by a hair, with a margin of approximately 2,000 votes ahead of BJP.

But this time newly formed Raijor Dal will field Dharjya Konwar as well from the same very constituency who did not file nomination in the last assembly election for some unknown reasons even though his name was being speculated.

Congress many times have alleged that Raijor Dal and Assam Jatiya Parishad had divided their votes against BJP which resulted in BJP's massive victory in the last assembly polls and became the first non-Congress party to get two consecutive terms in Assam. Now the question is being raised if due to Raijor Dal's interference history will repeat and BJP might breach Conngress' Thowra bastion twice.

Due to the lack of primary workers, Raijor Dal was accused of trying to "hijack" Congress booths for the by-election earlier. Now in recent developments, InsideNE was informed that Raijor Dal and their president cum Sibsagar MLA Akhil Gogoi comes with a list of Congress booth/block level key persons to meet them personally whereas the same is not being seen doing with the BJP workers yet.

As per sources, many Congress workers have raised fingers at Raijor Dal's intention and accused them of trying to help BJP.

"In Thowra Congress never lost its base. In five years we have worked a lot and hence Sushanta Borgohain could secure a victory against BJP. Likewise, BJP former MLA Kushal Dowari has also strengthened the party in many ways in the constituency. Now tell me what kind of presence Raijor Dal had through all these years? What is the meaning of interfering now out of nowhere when the only thing they will do is vote division of the opposition," said a primary Congress worker on condition of anonymity.

It is also being speculated that the Communist Party of India (Marxist) may also field candidate from Thowra this time since Congress has dissolved grand-alliance. Akhil Gogoi's lawyer in his NIA case, Krishna Gogoi, was supposed to contest on a grand-alliance ticket from CPI(M) as sources have told InsideNE earlier.
