Assam: Chief Secretary orders closure of shops & markets at 6 PM to contain COVID

GUWAHATI: Assam's chief secretary Jishnu Baruah today issued a new set of directives including the shutting down of all shops and other establishments by 6 pm in a bid to contain the outbreak of the novel coronavirus.

"All establishments should close down by 6 pm except pharmacies. Emergency services and essential services will continue," Baruah said at a presser today.

Baruah said that 1,367 -- the highest number of cases in the second wave of infections -- was reported yesterday. "On average, we are testing 40,000 people each day," he added.

In Assam, the COVID-19 positivity rate is currently around 2-3%.

India's COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and 50 lakh on September 16.

It went past 60 lakh on September 28, 70 lakh on October 11, crossed 80 lakh on October 29, 90 lakh on November 20 and surpassed the one-crore mark on December 19.
