GUWAHATI: Activist-turned MLA Akhil Gogoi today launched into a tirade against Assam’s chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over his directive to fire at and sarcastically said that he should be made the chief justice of the Gauhati High Court.
Decrying the state government over its alleged support for “trigger happy” police personnel, Gogoi said that “if accused persons are being gunned down, all the Courts of Assam should be shut down.”
“Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma should be made the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court. He should be made the Chief Justice, Chief Minister, and head of police,” the Sivasagar said, taking sarcastic jibes at his bete noire.
Gogoi suggested that instead of firing at criminals, the officials must ensure that the criminals are heard. They should be punished as per the provisions of the law, he added.
“If they are killed in encounters, the police will never get to know who put them up to it. Who gave money to Bubu Konwar to kill people. These things will never come to light,” he added.
Since June 1, more than 20 instances of encounters either of under-custody accused or during raids have taken place in the state in which, in at least five instances, an accused has died.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently said shooting at criminals “should be the pattern” if they attempt to escape from custody.” The Bharatiya Janata Party leader’s comments came when he was asked about an increase in shootout incidents in the state.
“This should be the pattern if someone who is a rapist tries to flee after snatching arms from police or someone who tries to escape while recreating a scene of crime,” the chief minister said during a conference on “Redefining Policing Standards in Assam”. “Police shouldn’t shoot them in the chest, but law permits shooting them in the leg.”
