Assam CM launches widow support scheme; assures aid to all COVID-19 victims' kins

GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has launched CM's COVID-19 Widow Support Scheme today at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra here.

Women rendered widow by COVID-19 were facilitated with a cheque of Rs. 2.5 lakh each.

"All over the state a total of 874 women rendered widow by the pandemic will receive the cheque today, here we have invited 176 women," said CM Himanta Biswa.

In today's inauguration ceremony as many as 176 beneficiaries were present from the districts of Baksa, Darrang, Morigaon, Nalbari, Nagaon, Goalpara, Kamrup, Kamrup (M).

"This is not a day feel proud or happy. We have lost our near and dear one," CM Sarma expressed.

"But I want to include that we have taken this initiative to provide some aid to the kins of COVID-19 victims much before than other Indian states," Sarma added.

Weeks earlier, the Assam Government had launched the Chief Minister’s Sishu Seva Scheme where children would receive a fixed deposit of Rs. 7,81,000 with a monthly interest of Rs. 3,500 till they attain the age of 24.

"All these have been possible, even during a hard time like a pandemic, due to PM Narendra Modi. Otherwise, we would have not been able to provide salaries to our employees," Sarma asserted.

The guardian ministers will hand over the remaining cheques to the beneficiaries on upcoming Saturday and Sunday.

CM Sarma has also asserted that this is just the beginning. As the applications are still coming from various parts of the state, the government will be providing aids to every eligible person under this scheme.

Sarma also informed that approximately 5000 people, who have lost their near and dear ones to the COVID-19 pandemic, will also receive some amount of aid which to be included in this budget session. The Finance Minister was also instructed to do the needful.
