Assam CM Meets PM With Litany For Revival of Two Paper Mills

Guwahati, June 12, 2019:

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday and submitted a memorandum to him urging him to revive the two paper mills of the state – Nagaon and Cachar.

In his memorandum Sonowal reminded the Prime Minister about BJP’s poll promises to revive the two paper mills in 2016.

He also informed the Prime Minister through the memorandum that the employees of the two paper mills have approached the National Company Law Tribunal and thereafter National Company Law Appellate Tribunal in this regard.

Operations at the Panchgram Paper Mill in Cachar and Jagiroad Paper Mill in Nagaon remained suspended since September 2015 and March 2017 respectively. Employees have not received their salaries since 2016. Many employees committed suicide after the closure of operations of the two mills.

The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT), in its verdict, prohibited the shut-down of two paper mills in Assam. The three-judge bench of NCLAT headed by Justice SJ Mukhopadhaya ordered the prohibition of liquidation of the two paper mills under Hindustan Paper Corporation Limited in Jagiroad and Cachar.

Meanwhile, Sonowal took to Twitter to announce that the duo had met to bring 'rapid development' to Assam. He wrote: "Meeting & listening to PM Shri Narendra Modi ji has always been a huge source of inspiration and guidance for me. I extended him greetings on behalf of the people of Assam for his second tenure as India's Prime Minister and discussed roadmap for Assam's rapid development."

It may be mentioned that the Assam Chief Minister had on Tuesday met Union Minister Smriti Irani to discuss the problems faced by women and children in the State if Assam.
