Guwahati, July 29, 2019:

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal announced that the state government will approach the Centre to hold a Wagah-like retreat ceremony in Malegarh near in Karimganj of Assam at the Indo-Bangladesh border.

This was stated by the CM while participating in the Speaker’s initiative in the Assam State Assembly on the subject ‘Socio-economic Development of Barak Valley’. Sonowal said that the approach would be made to attract tourism as well as promote nationalistic sentiments.

The retreat will be in memory of the sepoys who were martyred in the first war of Independence in 1857, the CM said. It is to be mentioned that the lowering of the flags ceremony at the Attari-Wagah border is a daily military practice that the security forces of India and Pakistan have jointly followed since 1959.

During the session, CM Sonowal also mentioned that a mini Secretariat will be constructed in the Barak Valley which will generate employment in the Valley. He added that nearly 40 lakh people will be benefited from the building of this Secretariat.
