GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has welcomed Sushanta Borgohain, two times Congress MLA from Thowra, to the Bharatiya Janata Party officially today.
“Young, and energetic, his joining our fold will strengthen and benefit the party immensely,” said Sarma.
Sushanta Borgohain was one of the major names being rumored to migrate to BJP after Rupjyoti Kurmi, four-time Congress MLA from Mariani, donned the saffron robes in July.
It was month-long speculation after BJP state unit president Bhabesh Kalita had announced that Sushanta Borgohain was all set to migrate to BJP. Later, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Bhupen Borah had issued a show-cause notice to Borgohain asking him to make his political stance clear. On July 30, Sushanta Borgohain officially resigned from the primary membership of Congress and yesterday tendered his resignation from the Assam Legislative Assembly as well.
On the other hand, Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader along with Pranatee Phukan, a five-time MLA from Naharkatia constituency who is also the chairman of the committee constituted by APCC President Bhupen Borah to take political stock of Thowra, reached the constituency and held a meeting with the other Congress members there.
Borgohain was also one of the members of the committee constituted by Ripun Bora, then APCC President, to take political stock of the Mariani constituency after MLA Kurmi’s resignation and he vehemently denied the rumours of him joining the saffron party.
“I am in Congress because I am attracted to their ideology not because I am hoping for something. I have no plans to quit,” said Borgohain.
Thowra is one of the bastions of the Congress that might be falling out of its grasp after losing its incumbent MLA and the prospect of facing a candidate from Akhil Gogoi led Raijor Dal in the planned by-polls.
