Guwahati, August 19, 2019:

In a leaked audio clip that is quickly going viral, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Ripun Bora is heard pleading a party worker to refrain from joining the rival Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

In what seems like a conversation between Bora and one of the Congress workers, he asks the person to think twice before joining the ruling party in the State.

“There are a hundred others queuing up to join BJP. Even if you join, you will be the last one in the line,” says the Congress Chief.

Pleading the Congress worker not to join the saffron party, Bora further says, “By the time your turn comes, BJP will already be out of power. That’s why I am asking you not to join the BJP. This is for your own good.”

Bora, in his clip, says that only 2-3 of the defecting workers would be able to find stable jobs in the saffron unit and all others would fall by the wayside. “Not everyone gets the chance to work properly. In my opinion, you should change your decision.” Referring to a bigwig without taking his name, Bora says that he would never fight for you. He would only fight for his benefit.”

The Congress Chief has requested a fellow worker asking him not to join the rival party. From the conversation, it becomes clear that the person hails from Biswanath district’s Gohpur town.

It is to be mentioned that scores of Congress workers, as well as leaders (such as longtime Congressman Bhubaneshwar Kalita), have ditched the 'grand old party', the Congress, for the BJP.  This phenomenon has been more apparent since the Narendra Modi-led party reclaimed its position as the leading party in the country by thumping the Congress in the 2019 General Elections.
