Guwahati: Against the backdrop of ongoing protests by farmers across the nation, the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee has accused the BJP-led Government of carrying out "atrocities on local farmers."

"At a time when the entire country has been standing with farmers, the BJP government in Assam has started violent attacks and lathi charges on local farmers in Nagaon," senior Assam Congress leader Bobbeeta Sharma said in a statement earlier today.

Claiming that the BJP government led by Narendra Modi has directly "ignored and neglected" the plight of the farmers, Sharma pointed out that the protesting farmers have been demanding the Government to repeal the new farm laws and have been staging protests all over the country.

The Congress in its statement said that local farmers were being lathi-charged "by the BJP Government and its police for trying to protect their land from being handed over to corporates by the BJP led government."

As per news reports, the farmers, of which most were women, had to face a police lathi charge in Nagaon's Mikirbamuni gaon as their agricultural land was allegedly being handed over to some companies despite repeated appeal by the farmers.

"An army of policemen were deployed in the area to evict the farmers from the land where they have been farming for decades," the Congresswoman stated, adding, "Even women were not spared from the lathi charge. Assam Pradesh Congress Committee Condemns this act by the BJP Government and assures the farmers that we stand with them."
