GUWAHATI: Assam Congress' president Ripun Bora has written to prime minister Narendra Modi to investigate the allegations that a recently-inducted Cabinet Minister actually hails from Bangladesh.

Questioning the citizenship and birthplace of Nisith Pramanik, the recently appointed Union Minister of State, Home Affairs, Bora said that "it is a very serious and sensitive matter" if the allegations of him originally hailing from Bangladesh are true.

Bora said that as per the report published in news channel namely Barak Bangla, Republic TV Tripura and digital news namely India Today and Business standard, Nisith Pramanik is a Bangladeshi National.

"His birthplace is Harinathpur, under Palasbari P.S., District –Gaibandha of Bangladesh. He came to West Bengal for computer study and after taking a computer degree he first joined in Trinamul Congress (TMC) and later on joined BJP and was elected as MP from Cooch Behar," the Assam Congress leader wrote.

Bora further informed the PM that the news channel further said that he showed his address as Cooch Behar in election papers by manipulation.

The Assam Congress leader also said that the channel also highlighted the jubilant scenario, including the statement of his elder brother and some villagers of his native village in Bangladesh expressing their satisfaction on being appointed Nisith Pramanik as Union minister of State, MHA.

"If it is so, this is a very serious matter for the country, that a foreign national is appointed as Union Minister," he said.

"Therefore I urge upon you to conduct an inquiry about the actual birthplace and nationality of Nisith Pramanik in a most transparent way and clarify the whole issue as it creates confusion across the country,' he said.

It needs mention here that Wikipedia has listed Pramanik's place of birth as Dinhata in Cooch Behar district of West Bengal.
