Guwahati, December 21, 2018:

Assam Congress workers staged a protest today in retaliation against Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal’s controversial tweet and burnt effigies of Sonowal and AGP President Ranjeet Kumar Dass.

Sonowal’s tweet was a response to the Twitter war of words between BJP Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Rahul Gandhi. In his tweet, Gandhi had earlier stated: “The Congress party has managed to wake up the CMs of Assam & Gujarat from their deep slumber. PM is still asleep. We will wake him up too.”

Himanta responded by tweeting that Gandhi had failed to respect Assamese sentiments by linking it to petty politics and the move was in fact implemented to commemorate an Assamese uprising against the British 125 years ago.

CM Sonowal also fired back against Gandhi with the following tweet: ““Mr Gandhi, this attempt to take credit on an issue that is related to the livelihood & development of farmers is quite frivolous. You have no moral right to talk about Assam or its farmers. Everyone knows how your successive Govts in Assam looted the resources meant for farmers.”

Assam Congress workers staged a protest in front of Congress headquarters Rajiv Bhawan with former Cabinet Minister and vice-president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee at the forefront.

Slamming the CM, the senior Congress leader said: “The Congress members are aggrieved at CM Sonowal’s allegations of corruption against the Congress party.” He (Sonowal) has accused the Congress of being corrupt. The party that has a glorious 133 year-old history[….]” He also slammed the AGP and claimed that they are opportunists and do not represent the interests of Assam. Bordoloi also stated that the alleged rift between the AGP and BJP is scripted and was carried out to hurt the Congress in the polls. He finished by saying that this tactic of crying “wolf” will not work for the parties in the future.
