Amid the skyrocketing prices of onions in the State, MLAs of the Assam Congress entered the Assembly wearing garlands made of onions, as a sign of protest.

It may be mentioned here that although the Government has assured that it will ease the pains by importing onions, the imported onions are yet to arrive. Meanwhile, the prices continue to rise unabated.

Earlier, it was reported that the Government of India was expediting a supply of over 5,500 tonnes from the imports from Egypt and Netherlands, to hit the retail markets shortly.

Assam Food and Supplies Minister Phani Bhushan Choudhury had also taken measures to curb the skyrocketing prices of the vegetable.

The Minister took an initiative to fix the price of onions at Rs 66 after the prices reportedly touched the Rs. 80 mark. However, it seems like the Minister’s efforts have been in vain, as the prices are starting to skyrocket yet again.
