Barpeta, January 10, 2020:

In a not-too-surprising turn of events, Congress MP from Assam, Abdul Khaleque, has received death threats from an unknown number, evidently for opposing the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act.

Talking to Inside Northeast, the Barpeta MP confirmed that he received the death threat on WhatsApp earlier today from an unknown number.

The obscenity-laden threat, that was sent in Hindi, states that Khaleque would be murdered for opposing the contentious Bill-turned-Act.

However, the MP says that he is not daunted by these threats. "We are not the kind to be afraid of death threats; we have opposed the CAA in the past, and will continue to do so", he told us.

On being asked about the party's next course of action, Khaleque said that efforts are on from the party's side to plot the downfall of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. "We are making concerted efforts to defeat this Act. I, personally, have also lodged a petition against the legislation, and the hearing is on January 22."

Talking about interim party president Sonia Gandhi calling a meet, apparently to discuss the CAA, the Assam MP says that the Congress party is launching a nationwide campaign against the CAA.

It may be mentioned here that the passage of the Citizenship Amendment Act by both Houses of Parliament has triggered protests across the country, as a result of which the ruling BJP party has been put on the backfoot. To offset the widespread public resentment, the party has undertaken shanti samadals (peace rallies), mega rallies where the BJP leaders are trying to dispel the 'misinformation' about the 'CAA'.
