GUWAHATI: Nandita Das, the president of Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress, today turned down heavily on the BJP-led government for the state's poor performance in the Niti Aayog's SDG India Index 2020-21.

Claiming that the BJP government led by Narendra Modi came to power during 2014 and 2019 with some "fake and false promises," Das said that this has been reflected in the recent SDGs report released by NITI Aayog.

"Assam was once announced to become one of the early states, if not the first in the country to work towards achieving sustainable development goals by 2030. Everybody was happy and felt very hopeful. But the report released on 4th June by NITI Aayog on SDG performance reveals that Assam ranked near the bottom among the large states of the country," Das said.

She further lamented that, in Assam, the criminal activities related to women have gone up during the tenure of BJP Govt.

"Beti Bachao Beti Padhao was one of the principal Slogan using which the BJP earned big public support. But during their tenure, the said slogan turned into a big joke and jumla. The crime on women continued unabated, unchecked," she said.

The Congresswoman pointed out that the number of crimes in the state during the tenure of the Tarun Gogoi led Congress government 4,46,119, but the number rose to 5,97,095 under Sarbananda Sonowal.

The Congresswoman further pointed to the fact that the maternal mortality rate in Assam is 215 against one lakh, while it is only 43 in Kerela.

"Similarly, the infant mortality rate is 47 against per 1000 children in the state of Assam. It is only 10 in Kerela. Global SDG target aims to reduce the under-5 mortality rate to at least 25 per 1,000 live births by 2030," she further added.

Total physicians, nurses, and midwives per 10,000 population are only 23 in Assam, while it is 115 in Kerela, she further added.
