GUWAHATI: Assam Congress President Bhupen Borah on Thursday hinted at breaking ties with the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF)- its partner in Grand Alliance.

Talking to reporters in Guwahati, Assam Congress President Bhupen Borah said that many leaders of Grand alliance is not maintaining the sanctity of the alliance and so the party is soon going to take a decision against such leaders. He said Congress is going to take a decision in this regard in a meeting on 15th of September.

“The grand alliance was formed to defeat BJP in the polls and members had gone to the people of Assam to ask for vote against BJP. But some leaders of the Grand Alliance have started speaking in favour of BJP which has hurt the basic principle of Grand Alliance. It is difficult for Congress to work with those not adhering to the principles. We are keeping a close watch on such people,” said Borah.

The All India United Democratic Front on many occasions was seen appreciating Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister from BJP ruled government of Assam. Upon asking how does the party react to such attitude of AIUDF, the Assam Congress President said, “The grass-root workers, district committee members and state leaders are offended with such kind of activities. On 15th of September, in our party meeting, we are going to decide on this issue’”

Notably, Bhupen Borah, on Friday night sat with an hour-long meeting with Raijor Dal leader Akhil Gogoi, who is a stern critic of AIUDF. Though there were speculations of Raijor Dal allying with the Congress, the party has said that it is going to fight the by-polls in the state alone.
