Assam Congress urges CM to make rehabilitate people driven landless by 'eviction'

GUWAHATI: Assam Congress today, lashing out at Assam's chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, pointed to some issues that have cropped up in the early days of the new government's rule.

Spokesperson Bobbeeta Sharma, issuing a release on completion of Sarma's first thirty days as CM, said that the Congress said that the Government needs to have a more "humanistic approach towards evicting people in time of Covid as done in Sipajhar and Hojai and avoid such actions at such a critical time and also make alternate rehabilitation arrangements for the landless."

The Congress spokesperson also took potshots at the chief minister over Assam being declared the worst-performing state in Niti Ayog's Sustainable Development Goals Index.

"This very fact as determined by the Central Government's Niti Ayog is proof itself of BJP's Government's poor performance in Assam. In Good Health and Gender Equality Assam's score is 28th and we are all aware that the present CM was also the Health Minister of Assam. He was also the longest-serving Education Minister and today Assam is on the bottom line in education as per central government report published by Central Education Minister," Sharma added.

"In this one month of the BJP Government, the new captain that is the new Chief Minister Sri Himanta Biswa Sarma is seen to be trying very hard on building his image as being strict on issues of drug peddling and cow smuggling which is no doubt praiseworthy. But the question arises in the last five years what was the BJP Government doing by not apprehending the drug peddlers or not taking any strong step against cow smuggling as they are trying to do now? Why were they allowed to carry on these nefarious activities in the last five years? Who benefitted in those last five years when Government and Assam police were turning a blind eye to such activities?," the Congress asked.

She also asked why the CM is "quiet " on the alleged housing scam that has unfolded in the blocking of a large number of flats in Games Village for NGOs.

"He [Sarma] is also quiet on the appointment of relatives of Minister Sanjay Kishan in his own Ministry of Welfare of Tea Tribes and Labour," she said, before going on to claim that "nepotism in the appointment of government jobs in Department of P& RD happened even in the previous BJP government and it is continuing unabated."

She further chided the BJP-led government over its "attempt at backdoor implementation of CAA through the direction of the Central Govt to Assam Govt to 'disseminate information regarding grant of Citizenship to migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan who hold Long Term Visas."

"Without a proper NRC, how can Assam grant citizenship to any migrant? This is a total betrayal of the people of Assam and disregard of the Assam Accord," Sarma added.

"As a constructive opposition ", the APCC further urged the Government to make vaccine registration policy easier so that it can include those who do not have mobiles.

"They should also expand the frontline workers category to include taxi drivers, rickshaw pullers, domestic helpers, all delivery boys, medicine shop and grocery shop workers, vegetable vendors, petrol pump workers, and electricians so that they can get priority vaccination," Sharma stated in her communique.
