The Assam Congress has urged the state government to bring back the people stranded in different parts of the country. Following the lockdown measures, the migrant workers based in different parts of the country are facing unprecedented levels of problems with reports coming of hundreds of people stuck amid uncertainties.

Taking stock of the situation, Debabrata Saikia, leader of the opposition, on Monday urged the state government to bring back the people of the state stranded in different parts of the country. “Many state governments including the Maharashtra and Punjab have made all arrangements to send back the stranded people to their respective states. Assam government should also take immediate steps in the matter,” the Congress leader said.

The leader also urged the Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to contact the Tamil Nadu government to bring back the people of the state stranded there by the train which will travel from Chennai to Assam from tomorrow onwards. “A large number of people of the state are there. The state government should urgently take a call in the matter,” he added.

Meanwhile, he alleged that the Gujarat government has not taken any initiative in the matter. “Hence, the Congress party has taken an initiative to help the stranded people to go home and announced to bear the train fare,” he added.

In a big relief to the migrant workers, the Indian Railway announced to run 15 pair of trains in a gradual restart of operations from May 12. The Indian Railway had stopped its passenger services 50 days ago to prevent the spread of the lethal coronavirus that has claimed over 2000 lives across the country.

All air-conditioned services will begin on 15 Rajdhani routes and the fare would be equivalent to that of the super-fast train, according to the ministry of railways.

The special trains will run from New Delhi to Dibrugarh, Agartala, Howrah, Patna, Bilaspur, Ranchi, Bhubaneswar, Secunderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Thiruvananthapuram, Madgaon, Mumbai Central, Ahmedabad and Jammu Tawi.
