Assam: Cop shoots self with 9mm service carbine

A police havildar of 15 AP(IR) Battalion, headquartered at Eraligool, Karimganj, in Assam allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his 9mm service carbine at Baruncherra BoP under Katlicherra Police Station at around 11.20 pm.

The 55-year-old deceased, identified as Suren Rabha, hailed from Chanatapara village under Borbari Police Station of Baksa district.


On receipt of the information, OC, Katlicherra Police Station, Assam, followed by senior officers from headquarters rushed to the site of the incident. The havildar was found lying in a pool of blood along with the service carbine on his left thigh.

Superintendent of Police, Pabindra Kumar Nath, said, “It is very unfortunate that the havildar named Suren Rabha had shot himself with his service carbine. We had recovered four rounds of blank cartridges and our investigation is going on.”

On preliminary investigation it has been learnt from the inmates that he was posted at the BoP two months ago and his behaviour was quite normal before the incident happened. No suicide note was found.

The service carbine along with two magazines, four rounds of blank cartridges and 66 rounds of remaining live ammunitions were seized.

Following Inquest and autopsy examination, the body was sent to the Hq of 15 AP( IR) Bn at Eraligool, Assam, from where it was taken to his native place.

A case (No.03/2020) under relevant sections of the relevant acts has been registered at the Katlicherra Police Station in this connection.
