The Assam Public Works (APW) on July 20th, 2020 demanded a probe into the large scale irregularities in different departments of the state government in the name of COVID-19.

“For a section of contractors, COVID-19 is a festival and an opportunity to earn more and more money,” APW president Abhijeet Shrama.

He further said, “There are some contractors. They suddenly turned patriot amid this crisis caused by the COVID-19 outbreak and occupied the media space. They have tried to be hero by indulging in irregularities.”

“A syndicate gang led by Janaik Dhanuka has been involved in the scam that is being carried out amid the COVID-19 crisis. They have been running this syndicate in connivance with some of the top officials of different government departments,” he added.

He further said that the APW would be compelled to write to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi with facts and figures if the state government is unable to take any appropriate action against the contractors.

Earlier, Sharma accused the government of releasing a big amount of money to some contractors amid the crisis period caused by the COVID-19 outbreak. “Around Rs 200 crore was released by the government to the contractors like Dhanuka and Ki Ki during the lockdown period without the cognizance of the public. This was done keeping the general public restricted at home,” he said.

Sharma had said that the organisation will move the Gauhati High Court against the irregularities took place under the nose of the government soon after the government withdraws the lockdown. “We will also write to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the matter. We hope a positive response from the PM,” he said.
