Assam: Decision on Titabor Constituency candidate to be taken by ex-CM Tarun Gogoi’s family

GUWAHATI: After the demise of veteran Congress leader and 3-time former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, there has been a big question mark over who will be the new candidate from Gogoi's new Constituency of Titabor.

It was recently announced by the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) that the decision regarding the Congress candidate for Titabor constituency in the upcoming 2021 Assembly elections will be taken by the former CM's family.

APCC President Ripun Bora said that Gogoi’s family will decide who will represent the constituency. “We will provide tickets to the candidate based on the decision of Gogoi’s family. The emotions of people of Titabor are still engaged with Gogoi and therefore we will go by the decision of Gogoi’s family,” said Bora.

Gogoi, who passed away on November 23, represented the Titabor seat in the Assembly from 2001 till the time of his demise.

Bora claimed that the BJP will not be able to wrest the Titabar seat from the Congress in the absence of Gogoi.

“The emotional relationship of the people of Titabar with Tarun Gogoi was immense. People of Titabar are in a state of shock. BJP will not be able to do anything,” Bora said.

Asked about the prospective opposition grand alliance, he said, “We will try to follow the path of the grand alliance concept that was formulated by Gogoi by including the Congress, the AIUDF and other parties. We will go ahead as per directions of the high command.”

There are also speculations that Tarun Gogoi brother or sister-in-law might be the candidate from Titabor constituency.
