Assam Doctor Arrested for Demanding 'Bribe' for Autopsy

Guwahati, October 22, 2019:

A doctor from Assam has been arrested for allegedly demanding money for a post-mortem report. Manoj Baishya, currently working in the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), was arrested on Tuesday for asking a bribe of Rs. 50,000 while compiling a post-mortem report.

The Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Cell of the Assam Police arrested the man after it came to light that he had asked Rs. 50,000 from a deceased's family for performing a post-mortem. The family has reportedly choked up Rs. 8,000. The complaint has been filed by a certain Haren Kumar, who had lost his brother on September 19 last. The doctor was  reportedly arrested for demanding money to change a post-mortem report.

This incident has sent shockwaves across the state. However, this is not the only news related to doctors which has shaken up the Northeast. Earlier, a Tripura Government doctor has been suspended from his job due to an “objectionable” statement in social media on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill last evening. Departmental proceedings will also start against him, reports said.

Doctor Kaushik Chakraborty is an assistant professor of Agartala Government Medical College in the pharmacology department.

A few days back, he made some statements against the Citizenship Bill and also made statement against Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb.

He was summoned a show cause notice. Replying to the notice on September 11 last, he explained the referred posts were made on his personal capacity and not as a public servant and added that being a citizen of India, he had the freedom to express his views on any issue. On Monday evening, he was suspended from his job. He was also ordered not to leave Agartala without any permission.

He wrote in his Facebook and his twitter “I’m a proud Indian citizen from Tripura and oppose Citizenship amendment bill as it would alter vulnerable demography in NE India & create unwanted tension between many communities. On this issue I am with Pradyot Manikya to protect the interest of legal citizens over illegal migrants”.

Sources said, Dr Kaushik Chakraborty’s Facebook comments on NRC were believed to have hurt the sentiments of Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb.

It may be mentioned here that several people, including college students, were also arrested due to ‘objectionable’ social media posts in past few months in Tripura.
