Assam: Ex-Congress MLAs Ajanta Neog, Rajdeep Gowala finally don saffron robes of BJP

GUWAHATI: Assam Congress stalwart and 3-time former Minister Ajanta Neog and Lakhipur MLA Rajdeep Gowala today joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the headquarters in Guwahati. Assam BJP President Ranjeet Kumar Dass and Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inducted the duo into the party fold.

Welcoming the three new BJP members into the party fold, Finance, Health, and Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said “the inclusion of these three new members will go a long way towards helping the party secure 100 Seats in the ensuing Assembly polls in the State, due to be held in 2021.

After being inducted by party President Dass, Neog said, “Heading in a new direction. I have done everything in my power to work for the people. Today, with an open mind, I am entering a new party. I have asked the BJP to induct me with pride and honour. This is a new challenge for me — to come from one House to another, so I hope I will receive the necessary assistance.”

Taking digs at her former party Congress, Neog claimed that there is a “gap” in the party and it lacks “vision.” At the same time, the former Congresswoman lauded the BJP for its “futuristic vision” and its “developmental works.”

“After serving for 20 years, I felt that I was not accorded enough respect. I was compelled by the circumstances to join another party,” she stated, adding that she will be working towards fulfilling the BJP’s “Mission 2021.”

While former minister and Golaghat MLA Ajanta Neog was expelled from the Congress party on Friday, Lakhipur MLA Rajdeep Goala was ousted from the grand old party in October this year for ‘anti-party’ activities.

Gowalla has confirmed that he was in talks to join the BJP when he was expelled, and claims that the Grand Old Party is losing support in the Barak for its policies and its opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Act.
