An explosion was reported at the Baghjan production well under Baghjan Oil field of Oil India Limited in Tinsukia in Assam on May 27th, 2020 morning. This created a panic among the people residing in nearby areas.

As per information, the explosion took place due to some technical problems in the oil field as operational work was taking place in the day.

Following the explosion, people residing nearby areas were immediately evacuated as gas was leaked. However, the chances of an immediate fire decreased due to the incessant rain in the area.

The Crisis Management Team from ONGCL, Nazira were pressed into service to bring the situation under control.

The blast took place while workover operations were going on to produce gas from new sand (oil and gas-bearing reservoir) at a depth of 3729 metres.

The well is located at 500-metre distance from the Dibru Saikhowa National Park. Locals expressed concern over the threat posed by such explosions to the wildlife.

Meanwhile, the Moran Students’ Union demanded to stop such excavation for oil for the interest of the wildlife and the people residing in the adjacent areas. The organisation also opposed the Central government’s permission for excavation for oil in the region.
