Assam: Five more succumb to COVID-19, death toll rises to 21

The Assam death toll increased to 21 after four more succumbed to the infections on July 8, 2020, the state Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma informed.

The deceased are Safikul Rahman, 60, Hidayatpur, Guwahati; Romoni Mazumdar, 60, of Patacharkuchi in Barpeta; Utpal Kumar Chaliha, 75, Kahilipara in Guwahati and Hari Prasad Mandal, 68, of Lalganesh in Guwahati. They all were undergoing COVID-19 treatment at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). Meanwhile, Jitendra Prasad (30) of Majbat, Udalguri, who was admitted to the Tezpur Medical Collegeon July 7th, 2020 with features of Septicaemia in shock with history of herbal medication, died of the infection.

“The patients were on invasive ventilation, had severe pneumonia, urosepsis and septic shock,” the minister stated.

“My heartfelt condolences to families and relatives of four more victims of #COVID19. These are trying times, and we all must adhere to guidelines being repeatedly given - wearing mask, social distance and not going out unless very important (sic),” the minister tweeted.

One Dhadaram Mura, 40, of Koliabor, Nagaon, who was admitted to the GMCH on July 1st, 2020, succumbed to the infection at 9 am.

The COVID-19 situation in Assam has turned grim as Guwahati alone recorded 3165 confirmed cases since July 1st-7th, 2020 while the state has reported 4789 cases. The number of total cases as on July 8th, 2020 has gone up to 13,336; of which 4988 are active and 8329 have been cured and discharged so fare while 16 died due to the infection.

Assam has crossed the 1000-mark in 60 days. It reported the first case on March 31st, 2020.

India COVID-19 cases so far

India recorded the highest-ever daily spike of 22,752 COVID-19 cases and 482 deaths in the last 24 hours, pushing the total tally to 742417 lakh. The death toll is now 20642, as per data released by the Union Health Ministry. Active cases in India stand at 264944 while 456831 have been cured or discharged so far.

Among the states, Maharashtra is the first state to cross 6 thousand deaths. It has recorded 217121 corona cases with 118558 cured, 9250 deaths, and 89313 active cases. The western state is followed by Delhi and Tamil Nadu. Delhi has corona 102831 cases with 74217 cured, 3165 deaths, and 25449 active cases. Tamil Nadu has 118594 positive cases with 71116 cured, 1636 deaths 45842 active cases. Gujarat with 37550 COVID-19 cases, so far, has 26720 have been cured, 1977 deaths, and 8853 active cases.
