Guwahati, May 26, 2019:

Flood continues to create nuisance in Karimganj district of Assam. The flood has broken many of the embankments and spilled into the nearby villages.

According to Government sources, more than 24,000 people have been affected by the flood. It has been alleged that this is the result of a lax attitude by authorities of the Water Resources Department.

Die to heavy downpours in Mizoram, Longai and Singla rivers have caused much distress in Karimganj due to flooding. Flood caused by the Lonagi river has caused a lot of damage to property in the area and has covered a lot of area in water.

Patharkandi and South Karimganj LACs are the worst affected by the flood in the district and as many as 24,000 persons are said to be suffering due to the flood in the region.

Moreover, the breakage of embankments has caused much damage. Areas such as Kabariband, Nayadahar, Mantrigaon, Dhalgaon, have been worst affected by the flood.

Two houses have been completely damaged in Mantrigaon due to the floods. It may be mentioned that people of the village had been demanding the building of an embankment since the past one year.

When Minister Keshab Mahanta made his last visit to the area, the people of the village as well as MLA Krishnendu Pal implored him to repair the embankments in the area, but the requests were never fulfilled.

Locals have alleged that this flooding is the cause of neglect by the State Government of Assam. BJP legislator Krishnendu Pal has also alleged that the situation could have been averted had the Government taken the necessary steps to prevent this catastrophe, such as the repair of embankments.

Although the Government has assured that the situation shall soon be brought under control, people of the area who have long been suffering the effects of flood continue to be sceptical.
