Assam Flood: Death toll rises to 40; 1,70,956 people still affected

The Assam flood has been rampant this year with the onset of monsoon. This has already affected major districts of the state. Even though the effects have only lessened in the last few days with the number of districts that are affected have decreased.

Several rivers including the mighty Brahmaputra in different parts of Assam are flowing above danger level, causing floods and consequently leaving thousands of families homeless.

The Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger level at Neematighat in Jorhat and Dhubri. Jia Dharali at NT Road Crossing and Kopili at Nagaon and Dhansiri at Numaligarh.

As per the latest data, the flood has still affected 348 villages in 12 districts in the state – Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Charaideo, Biswanath, Chirrang, Nalbari, Barpeta, Goalpara, Morigaon, Nagaon, Golaghat, Tinsukia. There are 20 revenue circles which are still affected.

A total of 1,70,956 people and 26,910 hectares of crop area have been affected in the second wave of the flood so far. Meanwhile, 35 relief camps have been installed. In the relief camps, there are so far 1,095 people.

There are 86,482 big animals, 34,434 small and 1,26,603 poultry also affected.

Deaths: 1 more death in Barpeta. Earlier, 1 more death in Dehmaji. 1 death in Raha. 1 more death in Mayong and Doomdoma. 1 more death in Athani. 1 death in Matia. 6 new deaths, with 1 in Chapar, 1 in Kaliabor, 3 in Baghbar and Sathebari and 1 in Tihu. 2 new deaths in Sarupeta and 1 in Dibrugarh. 4 deaths were announced on 29th June. 2 more deaths in Udalguri and Jonai, Assam. 2 deaths in Goalpara circle taking the death toll to 40. The total number of deaths from landslides is 24.

Other instances of flood allied activities

In Tamulpur, Baksa district various areas face extreme landslides.

Earlier, in Tinsukia’s Guijaan and peripheral areas of Dibru Saikhowa are badly affected by the rising floodwaters. Heavy erosion has been seen in the area.

In Rangia floodwaters have increased and parts of Kamrup have been badly affected.

In Barkhetri, Jurathal Village many families are trapped in the floodwaters.

In Dibrugarh Mohnaghat, Tingkhang Bhongali there has been heavy erosion in the Brahmaputra region. Even in Dibrugarh, Assam floods have entered the urban spaces.

Rising waters of the Brahmaputra, Dichang and Dorika river in Sibsagar, Assam are posing a grave threat.

Floods have also been witnessed in Kaziranga National Park. The govt has taken stock to protect the animals inside the park.

In Baksa, Balti river has created massive erosion.
