Assam: Gauhati University Cancels Upcoming Summer Vacation in July, 2020

Guwahati, April 16, 2020:

Gauhati University, one of the biggest institutions of higher learning in the Northeast Indian state of Assam, has announced that the coming summer vacations which were to be held in the month of July, will be withdrawn this year in the wake of the extended lockdown that has been called to curb the outbreak of the COVID-19.

In a note undersigned by the Registrar, the University administration stated that in view of the "unprecedented situation and considering seriousness with which we need to address all the related issues as mentioned, the Gauhati University hereby announces that the coming summer vacation which falls in the month of July, 2020 is hereby withdrawn for the University classes and its affiliated colleges/institutions unless otherwise notified depending on success of containment of spread of COVID-19."

This is being done as the University is taking a "challenge as to how to maintain and revamp the academic schedule which has already been unavoidably disrupted that has brought uncertainty to the students in particular and the academy community as a whole.

All the regular activities of the University will be resumed once the situation is declared to be congenial by the Central and State Governments as applicable, the Gauhati University administration further added.

It is pertinent to mention here that this declaration was made on March 15 last by the Assam Chief Secretary Kumar Sanjay Krishna while briefing the media about the state’s preparedness against the pandemic. The closure has since been extended and a lockdown has been imposed till May 3.
