Assam | Gautam Roy, Ramen Bothakur Suspended from Congress

Guwahati, June 16, 2019:

Assam Congress leader Ramen Borthakur has been suspended by the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC). Apart from Borthakur, former Congress Minister Gautam Roy has also been expelled from the party with immediate effect due to 'anti-party activities'. This decision was taken after a detailed executive meeting on held by the party on Saturday.

It may be mentioned that this comes after Gautam Roy, the former Assam Minister, was spotted celebrating after the BJP won the Lok Sabha elections.

Reacting to this, senior Congress leader Harish Rawat said that the party is bound to take action against those who doesn’t follow its rules and regulations.

It may be mentioned that the party had earlier threatened to take strict action against the former Congress minister Gautam Roy for allegedly celebrating the victory of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the recently declared Lok Sabha elections, and few other senior leaders by the Congress body. This action may lead to suspension as well, sources said.

The other leaders against whom action is being taken are former MP Dwijen Sharma, Romen Borthakur and youth leader of the party Partha Pratim Bora for allegedly breaking the laws of the party’.

It may be mentioned that there have been rumors that Roy might soon join that BJP party. Roy's name was also floated as a possible BJP candidate from Silchar Constituency.

Rajdeep Roy of the BJP won the election, defeating Congress heavyweight Sushmita Dev in the 2019 election.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Sushmita Dev of INC won in this seat by defeating the BJP candidate by a margin of 35,241 votes which was 4.41% of the total votes polled in the constituency. INC had a vote share of 42.14% in 2014 in the seat.
