GUWAHATI: Assam principal secretary of health Samir Sinha today said the Assam government was unaware of Regional Medical Research Centre, NE's (ICMR-NE) warning issued in the month of February on the presence of COVID-19 UK strain in Assam.

Asked whether the government had taken any measure after receiving the letter which was not made public, Sinha replied: "I am aware of this particular letter by ICMR, Lahowal. UK strain might be present as well as other strains and we are taking every step that supposed to be taken to contain the virus."

ICMR-NE, Dibrugarh had reportedly issued an advisory to the Assam government in February to take appropriate measures as cases of UK strain of COVID-19 had been detected in Assam which spreads faster than the earlier one.

However, since February, state health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was heard talking about the UK strain only on Saturday and Sunday talking to journalists when the election was over.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority had issued a fresh set of guidelines today to contain the sudden surge of the COVID-19 virus in the state, by putting some restrictions with immediate effect.
