GUWAHATI: Jagadish Mukhi, the governor of Assam, has constituted a one man enquiry committee headed by IAS officer Moloy Bora to investigate the death of 12-year-old house maid Sumila Ronghangpi.

The terms of reference of the enquiry committee would be to ascertain the facts and circumstances leading to the death of a 12-year-old housemaid named Sumila Ronghangpi hailing from Karbi Anglong in the house of one Prakash Borthakur of Raha and to suggest measures for regulation of possible violent protests causing loss of life and injury and also loss of public property.

The order also stated that the report by the enquiry committee is to be submitted within 30 days from the date of issue of the notification, which was April 26.

Sumila Ronghangpi, a 12-year-old minor who was working as a house help, was mysteriously charred to death on April 22 evening in Raha, Assam.

Prakash Borthakur, the patriarch of the family that she was working for, and his son Nayanjyoti Borthakur, were both arrested by police in Nagaon as investigation revealed that the victim had died before she was charred.

Later, Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (ASCPCR) had claimed that the minor girl was sexually abused before getting killed which resulted in her pregnancy.

The victim was a resident of Sar Kro Kudam Ronghang village in West Karbi Anglong, Assam.

The latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data revealed that Assam registered 6,608 cases of crime against children in the year of 2019 which is the highest among any other Northeastern state of India, and it's been increasing year after year.

Among these cases, there were 3 incidents of murder with rape, which was another highest number of cases that other Northeastern states as well.

Meghalaya, which was at the second position among the northeastern states recorded only 379 as compared to Assam.

Assam also registered 68 cases under Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act with 69 victims who fell into prey.
