HOJAI: The Assam government has deployed 1000 police and CRPF personnel to carry out a massive eviction drive in Lumding area of Hojai district to clear the illegal encroachment in the Lumding Reserve forest, as directed by the Guwahati High Court.

The eviction campaign is currently underway and will last until Tuesday.

On September 30, 2021, the Guwahati High Court directed the Assam government to clear the encroachment in the reserve forest in phases.

According to reports, the government will clear about 500 hectares of encroached forest land within these two days.

Elephants and JCBs are being used in the eviction drive.

According to Hojai Deputy Commissioner Anupam Choudhary, the situation in the area is currently normal, and nearly 99 percent of the families have already left after being advised to do so by the district administration.

Hojai Superintendent of Police Barun Pukayastha stated that the deployment of approximately 1,000 police and CRPF personnel is standard procedure.

The eviction is proceeding smoothly because the settlers understood the High Court's order during the counselling.
