The educational institutions may reopen from September 1st, 2020 amid the COVID-19 crisis in Assam. For that, the Education Department has proposed certain sets of guidelines for imparting informal education till the restriction on the opening of educational institutions continues both for government and private schools in the state.

The guidelines are placed in the public domain to obtain views and suggestions from the different stake holders on the proposed guidelines, required if any.

The state government is considering reopening of schools and colleges from September 1st, 2020.

The government has made it be mandatory on the part of each and every teacher, resource persons, panchayat officials and officials of Education Department to get them tested for COVID-19 in between 23rd August to 30th August for participation in classes.

However, the process of informal education will not be compulsory for all the students. Those students who are interested to Join the informal classes will have to inform to the Head of Institution and they will have to wear face masks and have to maintain physical distance of minimum 8 feet while attending the classes.

“All the Venues used for the informal Education from class V to VIII will have to be kept clean by the local people or Panchayat authorities,” the guidelines stated. However, imparting of online education through digital devices will continue as before without any break.

The government has proposed different sets of guidelines for different groups of classes separately. The guidelines are same for the colleges, medical colleges and universities also for imparting informal education. However, separate guidelines will be issued for the colleges and universities.

The Assam government on August 1st, 2020 announced to form a 40-member committee to recommend how to implement the new education policy in the state. The committee will be headed by the Principal Secretary to the State Education Department.

“The 40-member committee will be divided into sub-groups. They will minutely scrutinize every aspect and submit the blueprint by December 31st, 2020 about how to implement the new education policy,” Assam Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said in a press conference here in Guwahati.
