Assam: Govt opens up labs for research scholars, announces other key education measures

Taking stock of the situation, Assam govt has made some important decisions regarding the education sector of the state. Assam Education Minister, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma announce that the government has declared summer vacation from May 1 to May 31 so that it falls during the lockdown period. Mr. Sarma Further plans on starting the academic year from April instead of January and plans to end it by next year March 31. However, the government has sought suggestions on this regard from the State Education Board of Assam (SEBA) and academicians.

Meanwhile, Seba will declare results for Class 10 and 12 students by the end of June. To avoid students from coming to pick up the mark-sheet, the students will receive the mark sheets digitally. Later, the Principals are expected to verify the mark sheet.

The college admissions will be done online and the mark sheets can be entered via the internet. The second-year students of Higher Secondary, who are finding it difficult to buy books will be allowed to buy books from 26 to 28 May. The colleges are expected to maintain the guidelines as given by UGC.

The government is also pushing for online classes, says the Minister. Sarma has requested students to download the Diksha App and use its facilities for educational purposes. The Youtube Channel Biswa Bidya Assam can also be utilised. Another important step is that research scholars of science will be allowed to visit labs.

Talking about the future, if COVID goes on after 31st May. Mr Sarma says that classes for Higher Secondary 2nd Year might start. The portability option to be provided as students from B Baruah will be allowed to study in their local area college. Professors will be also allowed this portability. Furthers, details will be announced in this regard.

In villages, teachers are advised to teach 5 pupils in the front yard with the use of the Diksha App so that their education is not hindered. This teaching model was employed in ancient times, says the Minister.

To keep the engagement levels high among students, the govt will start essay competitions and topics will be given by the state through media channels. The assessment will be made by teachers and children will be rewarded up to Rs 10,000. Science and art students will have different topics. Participation will be made compulsory.

Another measure has been made for students studying outside who are stranded in different parts of the country. The govt will provide Rs 5000 subsidy to students coming from West and South India in lieu of them returning on the bus.
