GUWAHATI: Senior Assam minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently revealed that the BJP-led state government has drafted a bill to curb "deception" in cases of marriage. Sarma made this admission during an interview with Republic TV yesterday. Biswa Sarma said that the bill against 'love jihad' will be enacted after the BJP-led government is re-elected to power in 2021 Assam Assembly polls.

During the interview, the Assam cabinet minister stated that the Assam government had received several complaints where a boy hides his real identity and religion to "lure" girls into marriage (in other words, "love jihad").

Maintaining that marriage is a voluntary engagement between two individuals, Dr. Sarma made it clear that there should be no element of cheating involved.
