URIUMGHAT: Assam education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today said the state government will have to recruit a huge number of teachers to teach in local languages with the implementation of the new education policy of the Centre.

He also asked the youth of the state to prepare for teacher eligibility test (TET) next year like they do in case of police forces recruitments.

“Under the new education policy we will have to impart instruction in local languages up to Class V in Assam. For that we will have to recruit much more teachers than what we have done till now. So, I urge the youth to prepare themselves for TET like they prepare for police recruitment,” Sarma said addressing the 7th annual general meeting of the United Bodo People’s Front at Uriumghat in Sarupathar constituency of Golaghat district today.

The state government has lately recruited about 40,000 teachers to fill up the vacant posts.

Reminding the gathering that the state government has fulfilled its promise of forming the Bodo Kachari Development Council two day ago, he said it was the initiative of the BJP government in the state that impressed upon the Centre to extend benefits entitled to people of Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) to those who live outside the BTR.

Calling Sarupathar MLA Roselina Tirkey of the Congress a “mute spectator”, Sarma said the Sarupathar constituency needs immediate attention for development. “Being PWD minister, I am feeling ashamed to see the roads of Sarupathar area. I was not aware of the plight. I don’t want to blame anybody for it. All you need to do is elect a competent representative who can raise your issues at Guwahati and not a mute spectator,” he said.
