Assam govt to shut down schools with zero pass percentage in HSLC 2020

The Assam government has decided to close down 17 schools with zero pass percentage in the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) examination 2020. This came a day after the results of the examination were declared on June 6th, 2020.

“A total of 17 schools have zero pass percentage this year. So, the government has decided to close down the schools,” Assam Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said in a press conference here in Guwahati today.

He further added that the teachers of those schools will be transferred to different schools across the state within next 72 hours and the students will opportunity to get enrolled in nearby schools.

A total of 3,42,224 students had appeared for the HSLC examination this year; of which 2,21,756 have cleared the exam. A total of 6513 students had remained absent in the examination while 161 were expelled for cheating in the HSLC examination.

Assam has recorded 68.80 pass percentage which is higher than the previous year. The pass percentage in 2019 was 60.23. on the other hand, Sivasagar district has recorded highest pass percentage with 83.92 followed by Nalbari with 78.73. Cachar has recorded the lowest pass percentage with just 50.71.

Meanwhile, the Assam Education Minister said that the government has decided not to give the Anandaram Barua Awards this year. “Instead, we will transfer Rs 20,000 to the bank accounts of the students,” Sarma added. For that, SEBA will launch an website to apply online.

Moreover, the minister said that admission of the students in colleges will be free for everyone. “It is an effort to give a relief to the guardians of the students,” he added.
