Haflong, February 18, 2020:

Situation in Haflong and adjacent areas is "peaceful" and "normal" following the clashes amid the 'bandh' called by the Indigenous People's Forum (IPF), confirms Dima Hasao SP Bir Bikram Gogoi.

Talking to Inside Northeast earlier today, Gogoi confirmed that the situation is "peaceful" and "normal" in Dima Hasao following the clashes that erupted following the shutdowns on February 6 and 11. "The situation is peaceful on the ground now...the situation has returned to a state of normalcy. Yesterday, the Indigenous People's Front (IPF)and its allied bodies had talks with members of the Government led by Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.."

The SP also informed us that social media is currently being monitored by the authorities to ascertain that "fake news" is not being disseminated. "Look, at both the local and State levels, we are closely monitoring social media activities. In Guwahati, there is a cyber dome project that keeps track of these activities and they are better equipped than us. However, we also have a team here in Dima Hasao keeping track of social media miscreants."

It may be mentioned here that on February 11, massive protests broke out in Haflong, following the "indefinite bandh" called by the Indigenous People's Forum (IPF) demanding a separate district with a separate autonomous council without the Dimasas. Clashes broke out between the Dimasas and non-Dimasas.
