Assam has sufficient stock of COVID-19 vaccines, says Himanta Biswa Sarma

GUWAHATI: Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today said that the state still have sufficient stocks of COVID-19 vaccines.

Sarma, through social media posts, stated that the state currently has 3.25 lakh doses of Covishield and 2 lakh doses of Covaxin vaccines.

The minister also stated that another batch of about one lakh dose of Covaxin vaccines will arrive within a day or two.

He also appealed to the people eligible for COVID-19 vaccine to take the vaccine.

It needs to mention here that, India, one of the world’s biggest suppliers of vaccines, has been reportedly facing a COVID-19 vaccine shortage, partly due to a rapid rise in cases linked to a new variant.

However, the central government has maintained that it was not a real shortage but just a matter of “planning”.

Assam has administered 15,50,455 doses of the COVID-19 vaccines so far, which includes 4,18,600 frontline workers, 3,03,545 healthcare workers and 8,28,310 people above 45 years.

Among those inoculated, 1,19,372 frontline workers, 1,15,130 healthcare workers and 40,570 persons above 45 years have received the second shot of the vaccine.

Meanwhile, Assam’s COVID-19 tally rose to 2,22,367 on Thursday as 499 more people tested positive for the infection.

The state now has 3,613 active COVID-19 cases, while 2,16,284 people have recovered from the disease so far.

The death toll rose to 1,123 as one more person succumbed to the disease yesterday.
