Guwahati, December 26, 2018:

The historic Saraighat bridge, built at the site of Ahom general Vir Lachit Borphukan’s triumph over the mighty invaders, the Mughals, has started developing tracks.

Speaking to InsideNE, Commissioner of Police, Pradip Saloi confirmed the development of cracks in the bridge. He stated that repairing activities of the bridge is underway by the Public Work Department (PWD).

The bridge, which was completed in 1962, is finally starting to show the effects of ageing as craters have started developing in what is seen as an alarming development for commuters plying the route as it can lead to accidents.

The Bridge connects two shores of the Brahmaputra at Assam’s commercial hub Guwahati and is the first rail-cum-road bridge built in the region.

The bridge was inaugurated by then Prime Minister Jwaharlal Nehru and was officially named the ‘Battle of Saraighat’ after the famous war fought in 1671.
