Jorhat, February 8, 2020:

Hundreds of women on Saturday took to the streets of Jorhat district in Assam to remind the central and state governments of their resistance against the Citizenship Amendment Act or CAA.

They staged a protest rally called “Pratirodh” meaning resistance to express their continued opposition to the CAA. Slogans such as “We exist, We rise, we resist”, “Assam Women will never accept CAA”, “Azaadi” and others echoed the streets of the Upper Assam district on the weekend.

“Women from different walks of life have gathered here today to reiterate our demand to roll back the CAA. We are the citizens of a country, which allows for freedom and democracy. So, we oppose Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to implement the new legislation that limits us, said one of the protesters.

“Economy is down. Assam’s language, culture, economy everything is on the path of danger. The PSUs are being privatized. Our leaders are behind the bars just because they raised their voices. The government should solve the mess and stop sending people to jail merely for expressing their opinion,” said another woman.

The “Resistance” rally witnessed massive participation of women who shouted slogans against the government’s move. The women also called out to the people of Assam not to give up and urged them to keep fighting for their rights.
