Assam in bad condition as many dead due to floods: Rahul Gandhi

The Assam floods have been rampant this year with the onset of monsoon. This has already affected major districts of the state. However, the effects have only increased with the 2nd wave of floods that have struck.

As per the latest data, the flood has affected 2197 villages in 21 districts in the state – Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Udalguri, Darrang, Baksa, Nalbari, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Barpeta, Nagaon, Golaghat, Jorhat, Majuli, Sivasagar, Dibrugarh, Kamrup Tinsukia among other districts. There are 66 revenue circles which have been affected.

As such, former Congress President and current MP Rahul Gandhi has expressed his concerns regarding the issue. On a Facebook post, he said, "Assam is in a bad condition as many have died due to the floods. I give my condolence to the people who have lost their lives in this. I request the local Congress workers to help the affected people".

A total of 14,95,321 people and 87,018 hectares of crop area have been affected in the second wave of the flood so far. Meanwhile, 254 relief camps have been installed in three districts. In the relief camps, there are so far 15,289 people.

There are 8,00,189 big animals, 4,29,708 small and 8,03,449 poultry also affected.

6 new deaths, with 1 in Chapar, 1 in Kaliabor, 3 in Baghbar and Sathebari and 1 in Tihu. Earlier, 2 new deaths in Sarupeta and 1 in Dibrugarh. 4 deaths were announced on 29th June. 2 more deaths in Udalguri and Jonai, Assam. 2 deaths in Goalpara circle taking the death toll to 33. The total number of deaths from landslides is 24.

Several rivers including the mighty Brahmaputra in different parts of Assam are flowing above danger level, causing floods and consequently leaving thousands of families homeless.
