Guwahati, January 23, 2019:

The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) along with 30 other organizations on Wednesday are carrying out a massive rally “Bajra Ninad” to protest against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.

Speaking on the occasion, AASU Chief Advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya said that this Bill is communal Bill, unconstitutional Bill. “So at any cost or any condition, will not accept this Bill. After the historic Assam movement, the historic Assam Accord was signed. According to this Accord, Hindu- Muslim citizens prior to 1971 will stay in Assam with the right of citizenship but those who have entered after 1971, Hindu or Muslim must be deported,” he added.

Slamming the government over its polarized attitude, the AASU Chief said, “It’s not against any community. It’s not against Hindus, not against Muslims, not against the Bengalis. It is against illegal immigrants. We are repeatedly saying that India is for Indian and Assam and North East is in India. India, North East, and Assam are not dumping ground for illegal Bangladeshis.”

He further added that the Bill is a threat to the North- Eastern states.

On the prohibition of students to take part in protests from government’s part, Bhattacharya added, “Sarbananda Sonowal was the president of AASU. At that time, to fight against the injustice of Central government, students and people came out into streets. Was it wrong? If that was wrong then he must apologize to the people of Assam. Today also the political injustice from the part of Central Government is on, so the students’ communities from North East and indigenous people of Assam will continue its movement. No threats can prevent them from protesting.”
