Guwahati, November 20, 2019:

Protests against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill continue to rage on in Assam. Today, the Anchalikata Suraksha Mancha, an indigenous body, staged a protest in Ambari area of Guwahati to protest against the proposed Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

One of the protesters said, "The Government is trying to implement this Bill in a bid to earn votes from a certain community. This is a controversy to destroy Assam. Congress has fallen to its doom for favoring certain communities, and the BJP is going in the same direction. This is indeed ironic that this is happening during a period when jatiya nayak Sarbananda Sonowal is the CM..."

The protesters raised slogans against the ruling BJP party, and demanded the Government to withdraw the Bill. The organization further decried the Assam Government leaders, as well as the BJP leaders at the Centre for their intention to enact this Bill.

It may be mentioned here that Assam Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that the new version of the Bill will be different from the one that was introduced this year, which lapsed in the Upper House, presumably because the ruling BJP party did not have a majority in the Upper House.

However, this time around, the saffron brigade has a majority in both the Houses, and leaders, including Biswa Sarma, have opined that the Bill will pass this time around without much of a fuss.
